Work can consume our lives at times, making it difficult to separate it from the rest of our life. If you let the two overlap, you will really struggle to relax or prosper in either environment. This is especially the case if you work from home, so you need to make sure you know how to switch off after work. Here is an introduction on how to strike the perfect balance to bring out the best version of yourself at home and at work.

 

Keep the Two Separate

The first thing you need to do to find a good work-life balance is to keep them separate. If you don’t, you will find it difficult to thrive in either environment. For example, in the morning, spend time focusing on your children to get them ready on time rather than trying to also go through your work emails. Juggling the two will result in some serious mess and poor quality of work, so instead make your children breakfast, quickly clean up with some baby washcloths (a lifesaver) and then get them changed. You will be able to get to work on time and focus on your emails. It will be so much quicker than if you tried to do both things at once.

Or switch your phone off as soon as you get home after work to allow you to fully unwind for your yoga session. Knowing you have your undisturbed yoga session to look forward to when you get home will help you to focus on your tasks in hand at work and be more productive, reducing your concerns to enable you to fully relax.

The best way to do this is to have working hours. 7am-9am can be your time to get organised, 9am-5pm is dedicated to work and then 5pm-11pm is time set aside for friends and family. You will be so much happier in your home life, and so much more productive in your working life, if you make the effort to keep them separate.

Pre-Book Fun Things In Advance

Although you may love your career, we all have days when we don’t feel very motivated. So, the best thing to do is make sure you have things booked for you to look forward to. Try to have something fun booked every few months, such as a concert, a night away in a new place, a festival, a pub crawl with friends or a holiday.

The days that seem to be going extremely slowly will seem easier if you have something fun to do over the weekend. There is much more to life than work, so enjoy your hard-earned money and make the most of life! Succeeding in your career can be extremely rewarding, but having an exciting life outside of work is also very important.

 

Create a Specific Working Area

If you work in an office, you should find it easier to switch off after work. However, this will be much harder if you work from home, as many of us are at the minute! So, it is important to create a space that is dedicated to work that you can leave at the end of the day. This might be a small desk in a spare bedroom or a table in the corner of the kitchen. The most important thing to remember is to try and find somewhere that you won’t need to use after you’ve finished work. Having a set space that is only for work will not only make you feel more productive during the day, but it will be easier to unwind at night and over the weekends. Also, make the effort to get out of the house over your lunch hour as this will really help to break up the day.
